Japanese Garden in Wroclaw

CategoryParkAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief Information

The pond in this garden is more important than an ordinary body of water: the garden was created around an already existing pond, and during restoration its shoreline was shaped like the Japanese word for “friendship.” As a result, the place reads not as a collection of exotic details, but as a walk around water, where bridges, cascades, pavilions, and plants work together.

The Japanese Garden in Wrocław is located in Szczytnicki Park and is one of the oldest Japanese gardens in Europe. It combines several types of garden: public, water, one connected with the tea ceremony, and one with a stony beach. This mixture explains why not only the plants matter here, but also the order of movement, pauses by the water, stones, gates, and pavilions.

What to Notice First

You can compare two walking routes that diverge after the main Sukiya-mon gate and the straight Yumedono Bashi bridge. One runs along the pond from the gentle “female” cascade Onna-daki to the more turbulent “male” cascade Otoko-daki and then on to the Machiai waiting pavilion. The other leads across the arched Taiko Bashi bridge to the Azumaya tea pavilion. In this way, the garden’s layout presents not one central point, but a sequence of moods and stops.

It is also worth noticing the stone basins for ritual hand-washing and the lanterns. They do not merely decorate the garden: these 18th- and 19th-century objects come from old Japanese gardens that were dismantled. Beside them, the pond with koi carp adds another readable layer: the fish are associated with symbols of longevity, happiness, and courage. In the end, the small details explain the garden more precisely than its overall view.
