Wroclaw Indoor Swimming Pool

CategoryArchitectural structureAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief Information

The Wroclaw indoor swimming pool grew on the site of a former public bathhouse, but not as a single hall with water. It was built as a therapeutic and wellness complex: baths, a steam room, and equipment for hydrotherapy and balneology appeared alongside the pools. Therefore, this place should be read not only as a sports facility, but as a system of rooms for washing, treatment, rest, and service.

The first building opened in 1897, and in the original description it is described as operational. Later, the complex was expanded several times: a women's pool, a water tower, new floors, and separate pools for young people, girls, and boys were added. History here is visible not through a single date, but through the way different functions gradually occupied different parts of the building.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare Pool No. 1, the southeastern part of the complex, and the water tower. The first pool was later adapted for competitions: it is listed as 25 meters long, with five lanes and variable depth. This shows how a therapeutic and hygienic place acquired a sporting role.

The second pool was opened as a women's pool, and a distinctive water tower appeared next to it. This pair of details helps show that the expansion concerned both the separation of visitors and engineering. The two added floors with a bath, solarium, and buffet add another layer: the complex served more than just swimming. The sharpest trace of a change in purpose is Pool No. 4: it was closed, and filters were installed in the basin. A bathing room became part of the technical system.
