Brief information

Jerónimos grew out of the wealth from Indian spices, so its architecture is connected not only with monastic life, but also with maritime trade. It is a Hieronymite monastery in Belém, a suburb of Lisbon, and one of the main monuments of the late Gothic Manueline style in Portugal. It is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The connection with the Age of Discoveries here is not abstract: according to the source text, it was in this very monastery that Vasco da Gama and his companions spent the night in prayer before sailing to India. Because of this, the building can be read as a place where religious ritual, royal policy, and maritime expeditions converged at a single point.

What to pay attention to first

It makes sense to look at Jerónimos as a building that changed its meaning several times while never ceasing to be a monastery. Its late Gothic Manueline appearance is connected with the age of maritime discoveries, while the long history of its construction explains why the monument cannot be reduced to one brief phase: work continued in the 16th century and resumed again in the 19th century.

You can compare three confirmed parts and functions. The monastery buildings spread out in Belém next to the tower and palace of the same name, meaning the site forms part of a broader historical cluster near Lisbon. The western wing houses the National Archaeology Museum and the Maritime Museum: the former monastic space has acquired a museum function. The burials of Vasco da Gama, Camões, and Fernando Pessoa add another layer: it is not only an architectural monument, but also a place of national memory.
