Water Museum (Lisbon)

Brief information

The Water Museum in Lisbon did not grow out of a neutral exhibition hall, but around the city’s first steam pumping station. That is why its theme here is tied to a specific device: the water supply is presented not only as a history of municipal services, but as the work of machines, diagrams, and structures that helped water reach the city.

The museum opened in 1967 and is dedicated to Lisbon’s water supply from Roman times to the present day. This broad scope matters not in itself: it helps the exhibition be read as a chain of solutions to a single problem. At one end of this chain are old engineering structures, and at the other are wastewater management and future ways of managing water.

What to notice right away

The main physical clue is the former steam pumping station around which the museum was created. It changes the meaning of the visit: here it is worth looking not only at the display cases, but at the connection between the building, the mechanisms, and the city’s water supply system.

Inside, several types of presentation can be compared: exhibits, models, installations, and multimedia materials. The exhibits provide a material trace, the models help one imagine how the system worked, and the multimedia links the past with the current state and future prospects. It is also worth keeping the Águas Livres Aqueduct in mind separately, as it is part of the museum: it shows that the museum’s theme is not limited to the hall and the pumping station, but includes a major engineering structure.
