Kunstvilla Nuremberg

Brief information

The Kunstvilla became a gallery because the old villa was first saved as a monument and only later adapted for art. In 1972, the building was added to the list of the city’s heritage, which canceled the planned demolition: a publishing house headquarters was going to be built on its site. As a result, today’s gallery reads not as a neutral shell for exhibitions, but as a surviving merchant’s mansion from the late 19th century.

The mansion was built in 1893–1895 for private life; later it served as a company headquarters, a boarding house, a medical practice, and a library. After being donated to the city, the building was reconstructed, and in 2014 a municipal gallery of regional art opened here. The main turn in this story is visible in the very format of the place: contemporary art is shown inside a building that changed its purpose many times but preserved the appearance of a villa.

What to notice first

It is worth comparing several details that reveal the house’s original status. The two-story volume is raised on a high basement level: the villa does not stand directly at street level, but seems to separate the residential floors from the ground. The mansard roof strengthens the image of an urban mansion rather than a service building. The sandstone cladding, projections, and balconies serve the same purpose: the facade is composed of protrusions and platforms that make the house look representative.

It is also worth noticing how the new functions have been built into the old structure. The garden level is used for an art workshop with equipped rooms, while the exhibition area covers about 600 square meters. This helps one read the building not only through its decor, but also through the transformation of its levels: a private villa, a boarding house, and a city gallery left different ways of using one and the same volume.
