Brief Information

Nuremberg grew out from a rock: the very name of the city is associated with it, and it was there that the castle appeared, around which the settlement took shape. This starting point can still be read in the layout of the old city: the northern boundary is defined by the castle hill with the Burg, while the Pegnitz divides the historic center into the northern Sebalderstadt and the southern Lorenzerstadt.

The city should be viewed as a reconstructed medieval structure, not as an untouched stage set. In January 1945, about 90% of the old city was destroyed, but its key landmarks were restored from the ruins. That is why in Nuremberg it is especially important to consider not only the age of the buildings, but also which forms, boundaries, and functions were deemed necessary to bring back: the fortress, walls, bridges, churches, and public buildings.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare three lines that gather the city into a single whole. The first is the upper one: the fortress on the rock with the Kaiserburg and the burgrave's castle shows why the city began as a fortified residence. The second is the defensive one: the city walls with five gate towers recall that Nuremberg long built its boundaries not only against external threats, but also in dispute with the neighboring power of the burgraves.

The third line follows the water. The Pegnitz does not merely pass through the center: it divides the old city, while the bridges connect its parts. The late 16th-century Fleisch Bridge and the pedestrian Chain Bridge of 1824 help show how different eras of urban engineering coexist side by side. Among individual details, the Hospital of the Holy Spirit stands out: the medieval building did not become merely a monument, but preserved a social function. At the “Beautiful Fountain,” another clue matters: the Gothic pyramid is visible as a symbol of the square, but the original is now in a museum, so the city’s present appearance has partly been assembled anew.
