Madurodam

Brief information

Madurodam reduces the Netherlands to a scale of 1:25: various buildings and structures from across the country are brought together as one city, even though their originals are located in different parts of the Netherlands. That is why this place is best read not as a collection of models, but as a compressed model of the country, where canals, government buildings, a port, an airport, industrial sites, residential districts, and recreational areas appear side by side.

Behind the toy-like size lies a reason that is not toy-like at all. The park was built in 1952 and named in memory of George Maduro, a member of the Dutch resistance who died in Dachau. His parents provided the funds to launch the project, and the proceeds were intended for charity. This fact changes how one sees the miniature city: its neat facades and moving models were created not only for entertainment, but also as a living memorial.

What to notice right away

It is worth comparing the layout of the miniature city: the old center is in the middle, with a new residential district, a port and industrial zone, and a recreational area arranged around it. In this way, the park shows not separate sights from a list, but the structure of the country through the proximity of different functions.

The materials matter too. The models are mostly made of plastic, while the greenery consists of real plants: small-leaved trees and shrubs are constantly trimmed to keep them in miniature scale. The detailing rewards close inspection: The Night Watch is referenced in the window of the Rijksmuseum model, and vehicles move along the roads and canals. Interactive models add another layer: locks, drawbridges, a dam, and a windmill show not only the appearance, but also the operating principles of real Dutch structures.
