Tomb of Absalom

CategoryMonument, Architectural structureAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief information

The Tomb of Absalom looks like a freestanding monument, but its lower part is not built of stone: it is carved out of solid rock. The upper part, by contrast, was added from large blocks. Because of this, the structure reads as two techniques at once: as a rock-cut tomb and as a stone superstructure above it.

The name links the monument with Absalom, the son of David, but archaeological and architectural evidence dates it to around the 1st century BCE, hundreds of years after Absalom’s presumed death. This gap changes how the object is viewed: what stands before the visitor is not a direct “place of Absalom,” but a later monument that received a more ancient name and preserved it as part of its history.

What to notice first

It is worth comparing the rock with the tomb itself. The front side faces outward, toward the Temple Mount, while the other three sides remain surrounded by bedrock; a narrow gap was left between the rock and the structure. This makes the monument’s main feature clear: it was not simply placed by the slope, but brought out from within it.

In the lower part, a mixture of forms is visible: Greek pilasters, square corner columns, a Doric frieze, and an Egyptian cornice. The upper part changes its geometry: the square turns into a cylinder, then into an elongated conical dome. The carved “rope” cornice and the stone lotus flower at the top are important not as decorations in themselves: the hollow lotus may have held another element, possibly a hand, which is connected with the double meaning of the word “yad” — “memory” and “hand”.
