Tomb of the Mother of God

Brief information

The Tomb of the Virgin Mary is not located in a separate above-ground mausoleum, but inside an underground cave church in Gethsemane. The main tradition is connected not with discovered remains, but with their absence: after the apostles had buried her, according to the church account, the tomb was opened on the third day and found empty.

The history of the site is read through its lower level. Churches were built and destroyed above the tomb, and the church passed between communities, but the tomb itself remained preserved. Even after Saladin captured Jerusalem, the lower level was not destroyed, because Muslims venerate Mary as the mother of the prophet Isa. Therefore, what matters here is not the scale of the building, but the way a shared sacred space was preserved for centuries around a small tomb.

What to notice right away

The first point of orientation is the descent. A wide stone staircase of 48 steps leads into the church, and this alone shows that the shrine is arranged as a movement downward, toward the preserved cave core. Below, it is worth comparing the overall cruciform plan of the underground church with the very small marble edicule containing the tomb: the chapel is just over two meters on each side, but it is precisely this that gives meaning to the entire space.

It makes sense to notice the two entrances to the edicule, western and northern: they emphasize that the small chapel was designed for the passage of pilgrims. Nearby, the southern side of the edicule is important, where a mihrab was installed during Turkish rule. This detail changes the reading of the church: before your eyes is not only a Christian tomb, but also a place that was used for a time as a mosque. The eastern part adds another layer: an icon in a pink marble shrine behind the edicule.
