Admiralspalast

Brief information

The Admiralspalast grew out of a place where people first searched for water: after an artesian saline spring was drilled here, a garden bathhouse appeared, and later it was replaced by the Ice Palace. That is why the building on Friedrichstrasse is interesting not only for its theatrical biography, but for the very early-twentieth-century idea of combining sport, bathing, food, cinema, offices, and evening entertainment under one roof.

The complex was not built from the start as a single hall. It had a front building on Friedrichstrasse and side wings, one of which opened onto Planckstrasse; inside were hundreds of rooms. Later, the ice arena became a variety theatre, then an operetta theatre and a venue for other productions. This change of functions explains why the Admiralspalast should be read as a large urban entertainment mechanism that was constantly reconfigured for new audiences.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare the parts of the complex: the facade building on Friedrichstrasse provided the public entrance, while the wings showed that an entire internal system was hidden behind the sign. The layout, with one wing opening onto Planckstrasse, emphasizes not ceremonial display but the working scale of the place: it was not only a hall, but a multi-part urban block of entertainment.

The interior arrangement also reveals the concept. The basement was given over to a bowling alley, the two lower floors to a cafe, a restaurant, and a cinema with a separate entrance, and the upper attic floors to offices and later to clubs. The ice arena was transformed into a variety theatre, while the decor shifted from Art Deco to an Expressionist manner and then to Classicist models. Even the special box created during the 1941 modernization shows how a theatrical space could acquire political meaning. What matters here is not a single stage, but how the different levels of the building were adapted each time to a new role.
