Berlin International Congress Center

Brief Information

The aluminum shell of ICC Berlin was conceived so that the large building would look like technology from the future: the resemblance to a spaceship in the original description is tied precisely to the period’s ideas of advanced engineering. It is not a decorative shell for effect, but an important clue to how a modern congress center was imagined in the late 1970s.

The complex opened in 1979 and immediately had a scale that was noticeable even without knowing its program: 320 meters long, 80 meters wide, and 40 meters high. Inside, dozens of halls and rooms were planned, from small rooms to spaces for thousands of people. That is why ICC is read first and foremost as a machine for mass events: conferences, exhibitions, concerts, and theatrical performances.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare the building’s outer body with its hidden logistics. The aluminum cladding creates that very “space-age” image, while the elongated dimensions of the body explain why 80 rooms of different scales could fit inside. The connecting bridge to Messe Berlin shows that ICC was designed not as a standalone hall, but as part of an exhibition infrastructure: through this link, events could operate together.

Under the bridge, the original text places several service elements at once: equipment transport to the Fahrstraße-Bühne, fire brigade garages, and an entrance for high-ranking visitors with direct access to the stage via a VIP elevator. The southern multi-story garage with a police station and roof garden continues the same logic. Behind the striking shell, what matters here is not only the halls, but also everything that allows a large event to move without pauses.
