Brief information

Berlin did not begin as a single city, but as a pair of trading settlements on opposite sides of the Spree: Cölln occupied Spree Island, while Berlin stood opposite it on the eastern bank. This original duality helps explain a city that would later be assembled again and again from parts: suburbs, capital-city functions, occupation sectors, and districts with different postwar fates.

After the Second World War, the city was divided into four sectors, and later the Berlin Wall surrounded West Berlin for a long time. That is why it is worth reading it not as a uniform capital, but as a space where borders left traces in the layout, transport, and individual monuments. After German reunification, Berlin became the capital again, but its notable feature is not wholeness, but its ability to preserve visible ruptures.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare the water, the island, and the banks of the Spree: the original Cölln was on the island, while Berlin was opposite it. In this way, the river proves to be not an ornament, but the first urban axis around which the place grew. Added to this is the relief: the historic center lies in the lowland of the Spree floodplain between the Barnim and Teltow uplands, while a significant part of the modern city has risen onto these hills.

In the built environment, one can look not for a single style, but for traces of different ways of assembling a city. Individual features have survived from the medieval fabric; the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries brought orderly squares, broad streets such as Unter den Linden, ceremonial ensembles, and Baroque architecture. Beside these stand the deliberately preserved ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Breitscheidplatz: here destruction is not hidden by repair, but left as part of the cityscape.
