Burj Khalifa

Brief Information

The height of the Burj Khalifa remained a working secret until its opening: the project was kept flexible so that, if necessary, the tower could be made taller than its competitors. The result was 828 meters and 163 floors, with another 180 meters accounted for by the spire. That is why the skyscraper should be seen not only as a record, but as a building whose very form is subordinated to the race for height.

The tower was designed as a “city within a city”: inside are a hotel, apartments, offices, and shopping centers, while the complex has its own lawns, boulevards, and parks. The different functions are not hidden in a line of reference information: the building has separate entrances for the hotel, apartments, and offices, meaning that the vertical city begins already in the arrangement of the lower levels.

What to Notice Right Away

The main clue is the stepped silhouette, which the text compares to a stalagmite. This form does more than make the tower recognizable: its asymmetry reduces wind-induced swaying. Near the top, it is worth mentally separating the main volume from the spire: it plays a decorative role, but at the same time carries telecommunications equipment.

The facade is best read as an engineered envelope. Tinted glass thermal panels reduce the heating of the interiors, which is especially important in Dubai’s heat. At the base, it is useful to compare the three entrances: for the hotel, apartments, and offices. This makes it clearer why a single skyscraper is described as an independent urban fragment, rather than simply a tower with a record-breaking height.
