Cayan Tower
Brief information
Cayan Tower looks as if it has been rotated around an invisible axis: from the base to the roof, the body turns evenly by 90°. This is not a decorative gesture added to an ordinary high-rise, but the principle of the entire form: each floor is offset from the previous one by 1.2°, and the full twist of the building is composed from many small rotations.
At the same time, the tower remains a residential skyscraper, not an experimental sculpture. Inside are apartments, elevators, underground levels, and parking, while the building services are gathered in and near a vertical “stem” with a circular cross-section. That is why the most important fact here changes how the form is seen: the twisted envelope did not force the pipes, shafts, and main lines of the building to twist along with it.
What to notice first
It makes sense to look at the tower as a collision of two logics: outside, a smooth turn; inside, vertical order. The main detail is the continuously twisting walls from base to roof. They are worth comparing with the floor-by-floor step: each level is turned slightly, so the bend does not look like a sharp break, but reads as a gradual rotation of the whole volume.
The second detail is the movable perforated screens that protect the rooms from direct sun. They show that the unusual form was not only solving the task of creating a recognizable silhouette: the facade also had to work with Dubai’s hot light. The third thing is hidden, but explains what is visible: the round central stem with services preserves the vertical where the outer body moves into rotation. Because of this, the tower reads not as a “skewed” high-rise, but as a precisely calculated envelope around a straight engineering core.
