Campo di Marte

Brief Information

Campo de Marte is significant because it was São Paulo’s first airport: it opened in 1920 north of the city center, in the Santana district. Its history can be read through its changing role. The site began as the city’s air gateway, but growing passenger traffic and flooding from the nearby Tietê River forced the VASP airline based here to move to the new Congonhas Airport in 1936.

After that, Campo de Marte did not disappear as an aviation site, but became a different type of airport. Today, no scheduled flights operate from here; the grounds host flight schools, helicopters, and non-scheduled flights. Therefore, this place should be understood not as an ordinary passenger terminal, but as an early airport that survived the loss of its main flow of traffic and preserved its aviation function in a more specialized form.

What to Notice First

The source text contains little description of the exterior appearance, so it is better to base the focus of an inspection on the site’s confirmed functions. It makes sense to compare three features: the airport grounds as the city’s oldest aviation site, the absence of scheduled flights, and the presence of flight schools with helicopters. Together, they show that Campo de Marte has remained a working airport, but its current role is no longer connected with a mass flight schedule.

A separate detail that changes how one views the place is its proximity to the Tietê River. In the source text, the problem of flooding is specifically named as one of the reasons for moving VASP to Congonhas. Therefore, the airport space can be read not only through aviation, but also through urban geography: its location beside the river influenced which flights left from here and which functions remained.
