Brief information

Carandiru is important because what remains of one of South America’s largest prisons is not an entire complex, but the memory of a dramatic change in the site’s purpose. The São Paulo House of Detention was built in 1920 as a model prison, connected with the new requirements of the 1890 penal code. Later, when the institution was operating at full capacity, it held more than 8,000 prisoners.

This history is read through contrast: a place known for harsh detention conditions and the mass killing of prisoners in 1992 became Youth Park after its demolition in 2002. One prison block was left for a museum. So the main fact here is not the size of the former institution, but that almost the entire prison landscape disappeared, while one fragment was deliberately preserved as testimony.

What to notice right away

Information about Carandiru’s appearance in the source text is limited, so it is better to focus on the confirmed parts of the site. Three elements can be compared: the preserved prison block, the museum function of this block, and the park on the site of the demolished complex. The block is important as the only explicitly named physical part of the former prison left intact. The museum function changes the meaning of this structure: it is no longer part of an active prison system, but a place through which the past is explained. Youth Park shows another side of the transformation: the large territory of the former prison received a new use after demolition.

One more detail helps one look at the preserved block differently. The doctor Drauzio Varella worked here from 1989 to 2001, including during the fight against the AIDS epidemic, and later described the prisoners’ conditions. Therefore, the remaining building is connected not only with the prison’s architecture, but also with the experience of the people inside it.
