Congonhas/Sao Paulo Airport
Brief Information
Congonhas is located just eight kilometers from the center of São Paulo, and this proximity became both its main advantage and its main limitation. The airport opened in 1936 and was long the city’s main airport, but later ceded that role to Guarulhos: the old site could no longer handle the traffic and was not suitable for large long-haul aircraft.
The most important thing about Congonhas is not its size, but how tightly it is squeezed inside the city. The short runways cannot be expanded because São Paulo has completely surrounded the airport. As a result, the place reads as an active urban hub that continues to serve domestic and short-haul flights, although by modern standards it is considered small and outdated.
What to Notice First
It makes sense to compare the two runways, 1,435 and 1,490 meters long, with the fact that urban development has come right up to the airport. These figures explain why short and regional routes are the ones that matter here, and why large aircraft became a problem not because of the terminal building, but because of the site itself.
In the passenger terminal, the central hall is important: it was considered one of the notable examples of modern architecture in São Paulo. But this same terminal shows the cost of renovations: the modernization that began in 2003 tried to preserve the old historic section, yet the former appearance was largely lost. Another physical detail is the drainage grooves on the main runway, completed after it was repaved. They are a reminder that the pavement design here is connected not only with operations, but also with safety in rainwater conditions.
