Castel dell'Ovo

Brief Information

Castel dell'Ovo stands not merely by the water, but on an island connected to Naples by a narrow causeway. Because of this, the place reads first and foremost as a maritime outpost: the present castle was built in 1139 to defend the city from the sea. The island itself, however, is older than the fortress in a historical sense: the source text links it to the presumed founding site of Greek Naples.

The island's purpose changed sharply. In the Roman era, Lucullus built a villa here; later the island was fortified, then monks lived on it, and the medieval castle became the residence of Roger of Sicily. When the royal court moved to Castel Nuovo, the old castle did not disappear from power: the royal treasury and judicial institutions remained there.

What to Notice Right Away

It makes sense to connect three physical details. The first is the island location and the narrow causeway to Naples: they explain why the fortress was built specifically as a defense from the sea. The second is the castle's unusual shape, to which the name “egg castle” is connected; another version derives it from the legend of Virgil's magical egg hidden beneath the castle. In both cases, the name attaches not to an owner, but to how the place was imagined and recognized.

The third detail is the strengthening of the fortress in the 15th century in case of cannon fire. This fact helps one see the castle not as a fixed medieval backdrop, but as a structure that was modified for new military technology. Later this proved useful: during the Italian Wars, Castel dell'Ovo withstood fire from French artillery.
