Castel Nuovo

Brief information

Castel Nuovo was built as a new royal castle by the sea after the capital of Charles of Anjou's domains was moved from Palermo to Naples. This political decision remained in the name: the castle was not merely a fortress, but a sign that the center of power had relocated. Construction began in 1279 under the supervision of French military engineers and took three years.

Its founder never settled here because of the Sicilian Vespers. The first monarch to enter the castle with his entire court was Charles II. Castel Nuovo should therefore be read as a place where a defensive form quickly acquired a courtly and governmental role: under subsequent rulers, it remained a center of political life in Southern Italy.

What to notice first

The main clue for viewing it is the combination of fortress and ceremonial entrance. The fortifications are connected with Alfonso V's order to prepare the castle for cannon fire: the military function here is not a convention, but a response to a new threat. Against this background, the triumphal arch above the gate is especially striking. It depicts Alfonso's entry into the city and is called the first work of Renaissance architecture in Southern Italy.

It is worth comparing the gate with the Hall of the Barons. One element speaks of the ceremonial image of power, the other of its everyday work and conflicts. In this medieval hall, the barons' conspiracy was exposed, and the city council of Naples continued to meet there until 2006. Because of this, the castle looks not like a frozen medieval backdrop, but like a place where the old fortress long remained an active political venue.
