Sansevero Chapel

Brief Information

“Christ Veiled under the Shroud” stands at the center of the chapel, although Raimondo de Sangro intended it to be placed lower down, in the crypt, among the future family tombs and beneath a special “eternal light.” This shift changes how the sculpture is viewed: the chapel’s present bright setting displays the masterpiece openly, while the original plan made it part of a burial chamber.

Sansevero began as the Sangro family’s private chapel and burial place, and took on its present appearance under Raimondo in the 18th century. He did not merely commission individual works: he chose the themes himself, planned the arrangement of the sculptures, and even devised materials for paints and cement. As a result, the chapel reads as a unified system of monuments, where family memory, religious subjects, and allegories are gathered in one small space.

What to Notice First

It is worth comparing the chapel’s arrangement vertically and along its sides. The space itself has a single nave and no apse: the long walls function as a series of frames, where arches enclose tombs or altars. The altar area is separated by a triumphal arch; beside its piers stand the monuments to Raimondo’s parents, “Modesty” and “Disillusion.” In this way, the family history is literally held close to the main altar.

At the center stands the marble “Christ Veiled under the Shroud”: the cloth covers the body but leaves the wounds, bent legs, hands, and head legible. Nearby lie the crown of thorns, pincers, and nails, while the body is placed on an ordinary mattress with pillows. Above, this center echoes the vault: the fresco “Heavenly Glory,” with a dove and triangle, is lit by six windows, above which are saints recorded as Sangro ancestors. Above the altar, a trompe-l’oeil dome has been added, that is, painted architecture in place of a real dome.
