Frankfurt am Main

Brief information

Frankfurt’s name begins with a very simple urban detail: there was a ford here across the Main. The German word Furt means a shallow place for crossing, while the “Franks” gave the name its second meaning. So the city can be read not only as a financial center, but also as a place that grew out of a crossing, trade, and movement across the river.

Today, this logic is visible in the scale of the city. Finance, transport, and trade fairs have become its main pillars: major banks, the stock exchange, the airport, the railway station, and exhibitions all operate here. At the same time, Frankfurt does not look like a coherent old city. After the bombings, its historic appearance was lost; only some old buildings were restored, while skyscrapers rose in the western financial district. The contrast between the Römer, church buildings, and bank towers is not decoration, but a trace of how the city reassembled itself after the war.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to compare the city through several physical nodes. The Römer consists of nine buildings of a former municipal complex: after the city council purchased it, the central building was connected to its neighbors by passageways, so what matters is not a single façade image, but a cluster of houses. St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is Gothic and stands on the site of an earlier church; it was called a cathedral even though it was not an episcopal residence, so the name speaks more to urban memory than to ecclesiastical status.

The Hauptwache shows another layer: the Baroque building from 1730 was built as a prison, and now both the square and the transport interchange beneath it bear its name. By the river, it is useful to keep in mind the distribution of museums along the two banks of the Main. Another sharp shift in function is the former wholesale market hall, the Grossmarkthalle, next to the European Central Bank complex: trade infrastructure here quite literally stands beside financial power.
