Old Opera

Brief information

The present-day Old Opera is not simply a preserved 19th-century theater: the building was completely destroyed by bombing in 1944 and reopened only in 1981. Its appearance should therefore be read as restored urban memory, not as untouched antiquity.

Originally, it was an opera house, opened in 1880 with Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Later, world premieres were held here, including the first performance of Carl Orff’s scenic cantata Carmina Burana in 1937. Today the place functions differently: it is a concert hall and congress center, but the old name preserves the connection with the building’s former stage role.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to compare three parts of the place that are visible or directly named in its history: the building itself, its theatrical past, and its current function as a hall. The name “Old Opera” refers to a theater, but its modern purpose is broader: concerts and congresses have replaced its permanent operatic role. This gap helps avoid taking the name literally.

A separate detail is the building’s restored nature. After the war it was called “Germany’s most beautiful ruin,” and residents raised money to prevent demolition and further destruction. So the main observation here is not the list of famous productions, but the fact that the present-day Old Opera shows the result of a choice: the city decided to bring the destroyed building back to life and keep its former name.
