Goethe House Museum in Frankfurt

Brief Information

The Goethe House Museum looks like the writer’s ancestral home, but after the war the house itself had to be rebuilt from old plans. An important detail is that they restored more than just the facade: the layout of the rooms was preserved, and the rescued furnishings returned to a space connected with Goethe’s childhood and youth.

Before the Baroque building, two narrow connected half-timbered houses stood here, bought by Goethe’s grandmother. The writer’s father replaced them with a representative four-story late Baroque house. The museum can therefore be read as a dual monument: to 18th-century family life and to the postwar attempt to restore the house’s former internal logic.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare the floors: the first is connected with the everyday part of the house, the dining room, and the kitchen; the second with living rooms and antique furniture; the third with more personal and intellectual spaces, the library, the father’s picture gallery, and the mother’s room. This vertical layout helps one see the house not as a set of memorial rooms, but as an organized family space.

A separate focus is the two rooms that change the perception of the reconstructed building. Goethe’s birth room shows why it was important for the museum to preserve the exact arrangement of the rooms. The study connects the domestic house with literature: The Sorrows of Young Werther, Götz von Berlichingen, and parts of Faust were written here. Once one knows about the destruction of 1944, the rescued furniture becomes not decoration, but a surviving part of a lost house.
