House of Officers of the Novosibirsk Garrison
Brief Information
The House of Officers did not begin as a club for military personnel, but as the House for Disabled People of Siberia for wounded participants in wars. It is important to keep this original purpose in mind: the present-day institution grew out of an aid project that was long funded through donations and could not be completed before the revolution.
The building stands at the corner of Krasny Avenue and Gogol Street and in itself reflects several changes of purpose. It was first designed by A. D. Kryachkov; this was his last pre-revolutionary project in Novonikolaevsk. Later the property was completed, the House of the Red Army was added to it, and then the entire structure became known as the House of Officers. So here the name is not just a signboard, but a consequence of the building’s military history.
What to Notice First
It makes sense to look at the House of Officers as a building that was completed and renamed in step with its new function. The first point of reference is the old wing of the House for Disabled People: by 1916, two floors had been erected, while the architectural object was completed only in 1925. The second point of reference is the extension of the House of the Red Army, opened in 1929; after that, the name of the new part was transferred to the entire structure.
Alongside the military theme, later signs of remembrance also appeared: the Chapel of Saint George has been consecrated at the building, and a bust of Mikhail Kutuzov has been installed nearby. These details help one read the place not as a one-off monument of the 1920s, but as a building around which military meanings gradually accumulated. The source text separately emphasizes that its architectural appearance changed many times, so it is more useful to compare its parts and additions than to search for a single “original” look.
