Brief information

Novosibirsk began not with a kremlin or a market square, but with a railway bridge across the Ob. The settlement of Trans-Siberian Railway builders quickly became a city because the river, the railway, and later new transport routes converged here. That is why the city is best read through its crossings, stations, and lines that connect the banks.

The Ob divides Novosibirsk into right and left banks not only on the map. For a long time, the wide river valley shaped the city’s growth and its transport difficulties. The most unexpected trace of this arrangement is its former life in two time zones: the time meridian ran along the river, and the two banks lived with a time difference until bridges made the city more unified.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to compare several details linked by one theme: the city is constantly gathering separated parts into hubs. Novosibirsk-Glavny railway station was designed in the shape of an old steam locomotive; this is not a random play with silhouette, but a reminder of the railway from which the city grew. The span of the first railway bridge across the Ob in Gorodskoye Nachalo Park shows the starting point of this history as a separate commemorative fragment.

The same principle can be seen in later structures. The covered metro bridge across the Ob, together with its overpasses, is more than two kilometers long and turns the river from a divide into part of an urban line. At the Opera Theater, note the dome: with a diameter of 55.5 meters, its reinforced-concrete shell is only 8 centimeters thick. And Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is important as the city’s first stone building and as the beginning of Krasny Prospekt.
