Lenin House (Novosibirsk)

CategoryBuildingAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief information

The Lenin House began as a memorial building: money for it was collected through workers donating one day’s wages and through “Brick for the Construction of the Lenin House” stamps. So this is not an ordinary administrative building with a commemorative name, but a structure that was conceived from the very beginning as a visible sign of political memory.

Its location also shapes perception: the facade faces Pervomaysky Square, while the rear side faces the Square of the Heroes of the Revolution. Later, the building’s function changed several times: party and cultural-educational institutions worked here, then the Young Spectator’s Theatre, and since 1985 it has housed the Novosibirsk State Philharmonic. Because of these changes, the house is read not through a single date, but through its alterations.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare its present appearance with the forms the building had already taken. The original design was a two-story “people’s house,” but a third floor was quickly added, along with a crowning element in the center of the facade whose outline echoed Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow. Later this sign disappeared: during the 1943–1944 reconstruction, the facade received a classical portico with columns.

These changes show how the building moved from a direct monument to a theatrical, and then concert, space. This is recalled not only by the columns replacing the “mausoleum,” but also by more practical traces: filled-in balconies and windows in the pylons, the stage box added in 1937–1938, and redesigned interior rooms. The most useful way to look at it here is to see the facade as the result of several revisions, rather than as a single original concept.
