Lukiškės Prison

Brief Information

Lukiškės Prison is important not only as a former place of detention, but as a rare prison complex that was built from the outset as an almost autonomous mechanism. In the early 20th century, more than just cells appeared here: the complex received its own artesian well, water supply, sewerage, central heating, ventilation, kitchen, bakery, bathhouse, and laundry. This changes the way one looks at the place: what stands before the viewer is not simply a harsh building, but a carefully designed system of isolation and service.

The prison operated under different authorities and was used to imprison political opponents, while in modern Lithuania it became a remand prison. After its closure in 2019, it did not disappear from the city’s experience: since 2021, the complex has been open for organized tours. An additional contemporary layer is the filming of the series Stranger Things in 2019.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to read the complex as a set of different functions gathered behind a brick wall. The two prison buildings show the site’s main purpose, the administrative building reminds us that imprisonment required constant management, and the industrial building is connected with the prison’s economic side. The hospital within the complex adds another layer: isolation here was designed for long-term everyday operation, not only for locking cells.

It is also worth comparing the religious spaces separately. In the building with the prisoners, a Roman Catholic chapel was located on the three upper floors, while nearby, in 1905, a stone Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built. These elements help one see the prison not as a single monolithic block, but as a closed small town with its own services, rules, and places for different needs. The checkpoint and brick wall mark the boundary of this system.
