Vilnius TV Tower

Brief Information

The Vilnius TV Tower combines utilitarian work with an almost theatrical scale: inside it operates the Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre, while the tower itself remains the tallest structure in Lithuania at 326 meters. It stands in the Karoliniškės district, near the Neris River, and from the very beginning was built as a communications facility: after it was put into operation in 1981, the number of television and FM radio channels increased, the coverage area expanded, and broadcast quality improved.

This technical role sharply changes the meaning of the place after the events of January 13, 1991. The TV tower was stormed by Soviet troops; 15 people were killed, and at least 140 were injured. Because of this, the tall concrete structure is read not only as a broadcasting support and observation point, but also as a place where control over the airwaves became a matter of life and death.

What to Notice Right Away

It makes sense to compare the tower’s three “belts.” At the bottom is a circular base 38 meters in diameter: it emphasizes that this is not an ordinary high-rise building, but an engineering support designed for a heavy load. Higher up is the rotating restaurant “Paukščių takas” at the 165-meter mark; a high-speed elevator leads to it, covering the ascent in 45 seconds. Still higher, at 180 meters, is an observation deck, named the highest in Lithuania at the time of its opening in 2020.

The upper part of the tower is covered with copper sheets and insulated: the material separates the working top from the heavy base and recalls the technical structure of the facility. Another line of observation is the tower’s temporary transformations. At Christmas it was decorated with 32 garlands, then the lamps were replaced by lasers; during basketball events, a giant hoop appeared on the tower. The same silhouette was used as a transmitter, an observation deck, and an urban landmark.
