Vilnius (station)

Brief information

At Vilnius station, railway history has been brought outside: part of the museum display stands in the open air on the tracks in the eastern part of the station, and steam locomotive L 0236 is installed separately. As a result, the station here is read not only as a place where trains depart, but also as a working area where different states of the railway are visible: the passenger building, tracks, depot, and equipment.

The station appeared during the construction of the Saint Petersburg-Warsaw Railway; the first train arrived here from Dinaburg in 1860. The old station building has not come down to us without interruption: during the Second World War it was badly damaged, and by 1950 it had been rebuilt. This pause is more important than a long chronology: the present station is connected with the early line, but its appearance is already postwar, with a later reconstruction in 2000.

What to notice first

You can compare three physical parts of the station. The station building recalls the passenger side of the place, but its history is not the same as the date when the station appeared: the building was restored after destruction, so the early railway junction is seen through a later shell. The steam locomotive depot, built in 1884 and later converted into a locomotive depot, shows another logic of the station: not the facade-oriented one, but the repair and working one.

The rolling stock in the open air on the tracks in the eastern part of the station and the separate steam locomotive L 0236 serve as a clue to the scale of the place. The railway here is shown not as a display case with small objects, but as real machines on the tracks. Together, these details help one see the station as a combination of movement, maintenance, and memory: a train arrives at the station building, equipment remains on the tracks, and the depot explains where this system was kept in working order.
