Admiralty Office

Brief Information

The building, constructed for the Kazan Admiralty, was read for almost two centuries not as a naval office, but as a medical place. From 1836, the complex was occupied by charitable institutions and hospitals: from the Zemstvo Hospital to the city cardiology center. This shift is important for perceiving the facade: before your eyes is not simply an 18th-century administrative building, but a shell that long served an entirely different urban function.

The Admiralty Office stands on the building line of Karl Marx Street, in the protected zone of the Kazan Kremlin. The building was designed by V. I. Kaftyryov, who was associated with the first regular plan of Kazan. Therefore, the site is interesting not only for its individual facade, but also for its position in the historic center: the building is incorporated into the street order that shaped the urban fabric after the regular replanning.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to view the facade as a mixture of strict order and decorative splendor. The simplest point of reference is the brick two-story volume, placed directly along the street line. This siting makes the building part of a continuous urban frontage, rather than a separate pavilion.

On the main facade, you can compare the corners and the center. At the corners, the walls are projected, that is, slightly brought forward, and covered with horizontal rustication — bands that emphasize the mass of the wall. Around the portico windows, by contrast, attention shifts to the elaborate surrounds. Against the overall Baroque background, certain details are already rendered in the Classical style. Because of this, the facade is best read not as a pure example of a single movement, but as a building of transitional taste: the old decorativeness is still visible, but it is already restrained by a stricter architectural logic.
