Mikhlyaev House

Brief information

What matters about the Mikhlyaev House is not its size, but the rare preservation of an early stone urban building: it is one of the oldest stone buildings in Kazan. From the late 17th to the mid-18th century, these merchant chambers were considered the city’s most representative residential building, and later passed into municipal ownership and served state institutions, tenants, and workshops.

The building adjoins the Peter and Paul Cathedral, and this proximity helps one read its appearance. The upper floor received cornices and ornate window surrounds similar to the decoration of the cathedral from 1723–1726. As a result, the house is perceived not as a separate old structure, but as part of an urban ensemble of Moscow Baroque. The now badly dilapidated building is being restored; emergency stabilization work has already been completed.

What to notice first

You can compare the lower and upper floors. The lower stone tier, with massive walls and small windows, was a service basement, that is, the base and utility floor beneath the living quarters. The upper floor is arranged differently: ceremonial character, cornices, and lavish window surrounds are more important there.

It is worth noticing the three windows in the center of the main, southwestern facade. They mark the place where the ceremonial porch-stairway to the second floor used to be. After the porch disappeared, the windows remained as a clue to the house’s former layout: the entrance upstairs was separate and deliberately solemn. The general principle for viewing the building is simple: its different parts speak of different functions — the service lower level, the residential upper level, and the trace of the lost ceremonial entrance.
