Universal Temple

Brief information

Services and rites are not held in this temple: it was conceived not as a place of communal prayer, but as an architectural symbol of the world’s religions and as a museum. It is therefore worth reading it not as an ordinary religious building, but as a complex assembled from recognizable religious forms, where different traditions appear side by side.

Construction was begun by the artist, architect, and sculptor Ildar Khanov in 1993; after his death, the work was continued by his brother Ilgiz and sister Flyura Galeeva. The earliest building on the site is the family mother’s house, built in 1956, which became part of the temple during the construction process. This fact changes the way one sees the ensemble: behind the colorful exterior stands not a single completed project, but a place that grew around an already existing house.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare the neighboring parts of the ensemble: the Orthodox church, the Muslim mosque, the Jewish synagogue, and the Buddhist pagoda. They are placed side by side not for worship services of different faiths, but as visible signs of religions within a single architectural statement. The domes work in the same way: by 2007 there were 12 of them, while the project envisioned domes and other recognizable elements of 16 religions, including the cults of vanished civilizations.

The internal arrangement continues the same principle. The complex mentions the Egyptian and Catholic halls, the Hall of Jesus Christ, the Theater Hall, the Art Gallery, as well as halls of Buddha, Shiva, Krishna, Judaism, and others. The interiors are decorated with monumental painting and decorative applied art, so the different parts of the building should be perceived as museum spaces where religious forms become material for artistic assembly.
