Astrid Lindgren Apartment Museum

Brief information

The Astrid Lindgren apartment museum does not occupy a separate memorial building, but her own apartment at Dalagatan 46 in Stockholm’s Vasastan district. The writer lived here for more than 60 years, so the museum is arranged not as a showcase built around her name, but as a preserved living space: the second floor, 140 square meters, five rooms and a kitchen.

The apartment was opened to ordinary visitors only in November 2015, on Lindgren’s 108th birthday, with the permission of her family and the landlord. This fact changes how the place is perceived: what visitors see is not a reconstruction “inspired by” her life, but a home that long remained private and only gradually became a museum space.

What to notice first

It makes sense to look at the apartment as a set of rooms with different roles. The living room shows the public side of the home: here the family received friends and guests, including political and cultural figures. The study, by contrast, connects the apartment with the writer’s daily work, without any museum-like distance between everyday life and books.

The breakfast room, dining room and kitchen preserve the scale of an ordinary apartment: the museum is important not for its grandeur, but because a famous literary biography is woven into a domestic floor plan. The bedroom adds the final point to the personal story, because it was there that Lindgren died at the age of 94. One separate detail is the Russian souvenirs, especially a dish received from Boris Yeltsin in 1997. Such an object in a home setting shows how the writer’s worldwide fame entered directly into her private space.
