Brief Information

Stockholm did not begin as a continuous city, but as a place on the water: it stands on the straits between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, and within the city limits there are 14 islands. That is why its layout is easier to understand through islands, bridges, and shores, not only through individual buildings.

The historical core of the city is the island of Stadsholmen with Gamla Stan. For a long time, it was this island that was called Stockholm, until the city expanded by absorbing neighboring settlements. This fact changes how the center is viewed: the dense Old Town looks not simply like an old quarter, but like the capital’s starting point, around which the royal residence, the government, and the Riksdag later grew.

What to Notice First

In Gamla Stan, it is worth comparing the small island, the old streets, and the large buildings of power. This makes it clear how the original city on Stadsholmen became surrounded by later Stockholm, while preserving its role as the historical center.

The Royal Palace and Stockholm Cathedral help interpret the city after a major break in the history of its development. The medieval Tre Kronor Castle burned down in 1697, and a Baroque palace appeared in its place. The cathedral was also founded in the 13th century, but five centuries later it was radically rebuilt and given a Baroque appearance. Nearby, Sergels torg shows another type of change: in the 1960s, the center was cleared for a square with five business-center towers, and the old market disappeared. In Stockholm, what matters is not only ancient traces, but also places where the city clearly replaced its earlier fabric with something new.
