House of Nobility (Stockholm)

CategoryBuildingAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief information

The House of Nobility was built as a home for the Swedish nobility, but its main hall also became a political space: from 1668 to 1866, the noble estate of the Riksdag met there. The building therefore reads not as an ordinary ceremonial mansion, but as a place where architecture displayed the status of a group that had its own voice in the state.

This function has not disappeared completely. The building is still connected with events of Sweden’s noble families, and the great hall is decorated with their coats of arms. For this reason, the coats of arms here matter not as ornament for beauty’s sake: they explain for whom the space was created and why the formal facades, staircase, and hall were given such a solemn scale.

What to Notice First

It is worth comparing the building’s calm rectangular form with its more complex upper part. The facades are composed of pale red brick and light gray Corinthian pilasters of Gotland sandstone; this gives the walls a strict, articulated order. Above it appears a roof made more intricate in the Baroque manner, and it is precisely this combination of a Palladian facade with such a roof that the source text calls the monument’s distinctive feature.

The sculptures help the building be read as the house of an estate. On the northern pediment there is an ancient warrior with a knightly chain beside Prudence and Hercules; on the southern one, Nobilitas, the personification of nobility, stands between figures of military and civic education. On the roof, Minerva and the Knight reveal the motto Arte et Marte — “by art and by war.” Even the four obelisks at the corners of the upper roof projection turn out not to be pure decoration, but chimneys.
