Brief information

At the entrance to the Stockholm City Museum stands a sphere only 25 centimeters in diameter: this is Mercury, part of the “Sweden Solar System” installation. The small object immediately changes the scale on which the building is perceived: the museum not only tells the story of the city, but also becomes incorporated into the urban space outside.

Inside, the main line of interpretation is the continuation of the city’s history after the Museum of Medieval Stockholm. The permanent exhibitions are devoted to Stockholm: medieval residents and their everyday life, architecture from 1880 to 1975, and the city’s water resources. The displays change often, so the original meaning of the place is better understood not as a single fixed narrative, but as a set of ways to look at the city: through people, houses, water, and changing urban themes.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare the museum’s external and internal “measure.” Outside, at the entrance, Mercury stands on a pedestal: the small sphere is connected not with the history of the building, but with a large urban installation. This detail shows that the museum works not only through display cases and halls, but also through its connection with Ryssgården square.

Inside, you can keep your focus on three physical themes of the exhibitions: the everyday life of medieval residents, architecture from 1880 to 1975, and the city’s water resources. They help you read Stockholm not as a set of dates, but as an environment: who lived here, what houses appeared in the modern era, and what role water played. The children’s playground “The Square” adds another layer: here the city is presented not only as a subject of study, but also as a space for play.
