Brief information

Auwal means “first,” and this name contains almost the whole reason to take a closer look at the place: it is the oldest mosque in South Africa. It was built in 1798 on Dorp Street, on a plot that belonged to the freed slave Coridon van Ceylon. That is why the building is important not only as an early mosque of Cape Town, but also as the trace of a specific person whose land became the foundation for a religious space.

Nine years after its construction, the community split over a dispute about who should be imam. Some congregants left Auwal and built the Palm Tree Mosque on Long Street. This fact changes how one sees Auwal: before us is not a frozen “first monument,” but a place around which an independent Muslim community in Cape Town was already forming in the early 19th century.

What to notice right away

The source text says almost nothing about the mosque’s appearance, so it is more important to read not the architectural details, but the confirmed reference points of the place. It is worth noting the name “Auwal” itself: it directly means “first” and is connected with its status as the oldest mosque in South Africa. Dorp Street matters as the original address of construction, not merely as a line in a reference note: it was here that the plot of a freed slave became the site of a mosque.

You can also compare Auwal with the Palm Tree Mosque on Long Street. This second mosque appeared after an internal dispute in the Auwal community. In this way, the two streets help us see early history not as a list of dates, but as the movement of people: land, the first building, then a division among congregants and a new place of prayer.
