Signal Hill

Brief information

Signal Hill got its meaning not from its height, but from signals: from this 350-meter hill, ships were warned about storms, and ships could send distress signals. So the name here is connected not with a beautiful legend, but with quite practical maritime work.

The hill stands next to Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. Old English names described it as part of a lion’s body: together with Lion’s Head, Signal Hill was read as a reclining lion. The Noon Gun cannons appeared on the summit, but their important role was not military: they helped sailors check their chronometers until radio signals took over this task in 1934.

What to notice first

The main focus of the visit is how one hill connects shape, navigation, and the city. You can compare Signal Hill with Lion’s Head: together they created the image of a reclining lion, which gave the hill old names such as “Lion’s Body” and “Lion’s Rump.”

At the summit, it is worth noticing the Noon Gun signal cannons. They remind you that the hill served not only as a viewpoint: signals were transmitted from here, and the precise noon shot helped sailors set the time on their chronometers. The road to the summit and the views of Cape Town explain why this place was convenient for such signals. On the slopes lies Bo-Kaap, the former Malay Quarter, associated with Muslim settlers from Southeast Asia; this gives the hill another readable layer — urban, not only maritime.
