Table Mountain

Brief information

The flat summit of Table Mountain proved so recognizable that it gave its name not only to the mountain itself, but also to similar mountains, and even to a constellation of the Southern Hemisphere. This is a rare case in which the shape of a place became almost a geographic template: what appears before the eye is not a sharp peak, but a stone plane raised above Cape Town to a height of 1,085 m.

The mountain stands southwest of central Cape Town, on the southern shore of Table Bay. Its base and slopes are no less important than its silhouette: coarse-grained sandstone forms steep sides covered with evergreen forests and shrubs. Today a cableway has been added to the mountain’s tourist image, but the main impression is still created by simple geometry: a flat top and sharp slopes.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare the overall outline with the details of the slopes. From a distance the mountain may seem like a smooth wall or a massive table, but in Goncharov’s description the large silhouette breaks up into ledges, irregularities, and hollows. Especially important are the gullies washed out by streams: they create what the author called the “table legs,” that is, they make the metaphor not only external but structural.

The second line of observation is the material and vegetation. The coarse-grained sandstone explains the stony heaviness of the slopes, while the evergreen forests and shrubs show that the “smooth” mass is not an empty surface. Flora and fauna are protected on these slopes, including rare and endemic species. The cableway adds a modern layer: the natural form has become a tourist attraction, but it is still read by the same features: the flat summit, steep sides, and dissected slopes.
