Castle of Good Hope

Brief information

The Castle of Good Hope began as a coastal fortification by Table Bay, but now stands far from the water: the shoreline was pushed back by land reclamation work. This change immediately alters how the place is seen. The pentagonal stone fort was built not as a beautiful monument, but as a protected stop on the route to Asia, where ships could take on water and provisions, repair their rigging, and wait out danger.

The castle was built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679 on the site of an earlier fort made of clay and wood. The stone walls can therefore be read as a response to a practical problem: a temporary settlement was replaced by long-term defense. After the restoration of the 1980s, the castle is considered the best-preserved example of this type of company fort.

What to notice first

It makes sense to connect three details: the pentagonal plan, the five bastions, and its present position far from the shore. The bastions were named Leerdam, Buuren, Katzenellenbogen, Nassau, and Oranje; later these names were passed on to streets in Cape Town. In this way, the shape of the fortification went beyond the walls and left a trace on the city map.

The bell tower adds an urban function to the defenses. The bell of 1697 warned of danger and gathered residents and soldiers for announcements; its sound carried for 10 kilometers. Another stark trace of the change in purpose is the former prison cells from the time of the Anglo-Boer War. The thick walls, needed for protection, became an obstacle to escape here: one prisoner dug out the cement around the stones with an iron spoon and was found alive, but unconscious, after a collapse.
